An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 degrees rocked Papua New Guinea
An earthquake of magnitude 5, 9 degrees on the Richter scale rocked the region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea in 17, 59 hours on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake, at a depth of 75.4 km, was initially measured at 6.2783 degrees south latitude and 154.8044 degrees east longitude, Xinhua reports.
"Earthquakes of this intensity sometimes cause local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts, scattered over a radius of 100 kilometers from the earthquake epicenter," the U.S. statement said the center, which was conveyed to AFP.
